The hermit crab is an interesting creature, in that it can only grow to a certain maximum size before its shell will no longer accommodate it. At this point, not only has the shell become a rather cramped home, but the crab has grown to the point where much of it sticks out of its shell, leaving the crab exposed to predators. The crab senses that in order to survive it must find a bigger home in which to live. The catch is that in order to find that home, for a short time it must allow itself to become vulnerable, while it leaves behind the safety of its armored home.
