Media portrayals of ‘African gangs crisis’

The objective of this search strategy was to examine media reporting around African youth crime. In order to determine the impact of the African gangs phenomenon on the broader community (e.g., general public), we examined what ‘information’ people were exposed to through various media sources.

Relevant news publications were identified through electronic searches of bibliographic databases, news pages and Internet search engines. This search filtered for reports in English only. The search used Factiva to search the following news sources:

A general web search was also conducted using Google to identify potential reports. The first 50 hits from Google per term and country were screened.
