The first section of this book identifies where and why there is so much demand for rapid change. We explore the international trends that profoundly influence education sectors around the world which result in accountability demands from governments, societies, particular stakeholder groups, and business and industry sectors for many and varied changes to schooling. The dimensions of globalization include the migration of peoples, the advent and pervasive usage of a range of technologies, the rise of the knowledge economy and the demand for knowledge workers, the need to respond to students’ diverse needs, and the rise of prevailing philosophies such as neo-liberalism and neo-conservatism.
