This research was informed by case study methodology. There are nine case studies informing it, comprising black urban young men and women at the crossroads of their lives. The black youth that were chosen were between the ages of 16 and 18 years, and were in their last two years of schooling – Grades 11 and 12.

What these youth had in common was age, race, and an urban South African setting. They however had other traits not in common. The first being gender – four of them girls and five others boys. The second being class – five of them middle class youth, and the other four working class youth. Their urban setting also varied due to their class status.
