Manowar are very important in the history and evolution of heavy metal. A metal fan who does not know about Manowar is not a metal fan (Bayer, 2000; Waksman, 2009; Weinstein, 2000). On first coming into contact with Manowar, one imagines it is all a spoof, a mockery of metal in the vein of Spinal Tap. The first image one finds when searching for Manowar is the cover of Into Glory Ride, which has become a well-known internet meme. But Manowar are deadly serious, as are their fans. On their official website they are very confident and clear about their own self-worth1:
