Throughout the films Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther, we see a discussion of who can be considered for leadership roles. Decisions around who will be selected as a leader are often referred to as succession planning for leadership transitions (Froelich, McKee, & Rathge, 2011). Leadership transitions are exceptionally important for organizations. In Civil War, T’Challa is shocked by the assassination of his father, T’Chaka which throws the leadership of Wakanda into question. In Black Panther, T’Challa is challenged by other potential candidates for the throne of Wakanda like M’Baku and Erik Killmonger.

Leadership transitions are important to organizations to maintain continuity and flow. In this chapter, we will discuss how we can recruit potential leaders, select the best leaders, and how concepts such as legitimacy and the bases of power impact potential leaders. Finally, we’ll discuss how you can use this information to identify potential leaders in your organization and help them transition into leadership roles.
