This chapter engages with the notion of home and its multiple and complex relationships with ideas of identity and cultural belonging. Before giving voice to several scholars reflecting on their own experiences of home, and on how these informed their conceptual engagement in the field, this introduction provides a conceptual overview of contemporary debates on home.

Home, hogar, casa, maison, thuis, [bait], …. English, Spanish, Italian, French, Dutch, Arabic, …. what is home? Does home mean something different in different languages? What is the best word to capture the very meaning of home in our mother tongue? Do we need more than one word?
