The first chapter has addressed the complexity of identity and its dynamic nature and discussed its formation in the public sector with reference to the waves of reforms that took place over the last 30 years. It has been highlighted that behavioural and relational aspects have been quite overlooked, and that there has been scant research considering the intertwined and iterative relationship between identity threats, struggles and coping behaviours.
