In their book, The India Way, Cappelli, Singh, and Singh (2010), begin by comparing Indian business models with their counterparts in other countries. They discuss how Indian leaders are influenced by Japanese or Soviet ways of managing business more than the American way. They have highlighted the difference in doing business before liberalization, globalization and privatization era and how the model differed for multinational versus privately owned business. The emphasis of leaders on hierarchical system operating with high power distance was evident in their findings. Conflicting findings like drive to innovate, resistance to change and conformity with the past were a few characteristics of the India way of doing business by leaders. Finally, the book listed a few leadership characteristics such as broader social mission, service to others, search for meaning, helping others, compassionate and generous.
