While leadership and organizational development has always been the focus of my trade, I did not anticipate that my work would focus on teens and youth. My fascination with youth and leadership development took an unexpected turn when I spent a few summers working for a youth summer program in Boston. I came into the programs because of my experience in leadership development and to make some extra money, but I found myself captivated by the world of teens. I wasn't so far removed from being a teen myself, but had never witnessed what went on behind the scenes of youth programs until that point. As a staff member, I gained insight into how decisions were made and curricula was developed. Working with programs held away from home, I also witnessed firsthand what it means to meet the needs of high school students over an extended period. We learned together, volunteered together, ate meals, and hung out during free time together. The young people I encountered were enthusiastic, caring, curious, and full of knowledge. They had much to contribute and were eager for authentic spaces to express themselves. The staff members who received the most positive feedback were those who recognized the youth as whole individuals, acknowledging their capabilities and unique experiences. The young people I worked with didn't just want to receive opportunities; they wanted to actively shape their futures. This motivated me to explore ways to expand the presence of leadership, and help organizations create programs that empower teens to take active roles in their communities.
