Dr Richard Nelson is the Senior Digital Learning Developer at the University of Bradford, who leads the Digital Learning Development Team to support staff in creating engaging learning journeys through digital education. He currently chairs the University’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Special Interest Group and presents AI developments in teaching, learning, and assessment at universities, further education colleges and the JISC National Centre for AI. A former Software Engineer in Real-time Communication Systems, he specialises in online distance learning, digital education, education technology, and learning design using experience accumulated over 25 years in the private and education sectors. He has led strategic learning and teaching initiatives in several educational institutions and was vice president of online learning for a global professional development company. He has managed global projects that included partnerships between commercial providers, educational institutions, and national governments. His research has explored the human behind the technology, in particular academic identity in online spaces. He is currently working on delivering the University of Bradford’s Digital Education Strategy, leading international instructional design training programmes, and continuing to practice instructional design working on projects in the private and educational sectors.
