Career mapping is a process in which individuals identify possibilities for future career steps and evaluate their readiness for change by analyzing their current strengths and the areas in which they need additional experience or development to advance or pivot within their preferred career paths. The career mapping approach described in this chapter is facilitated by faculty development staff and faculty peers. It encourages faculty to consider career possibilities over the next 3 to 10 years, helps individuals identify mentoring needs to address through existing mentoring relationships or connection to new internal or external consultative mentors in discrete areas of expertise, and supports the creation of specific action plans for next steps.
