Abstract
This chapter argues that disinformation now operates as a professionalised weapon in the modern political arsenal. It has moved beyond a fringe phenomenon to become a central tool for inflaming societal divisions and accelerating political polarisation. The authors dissect the strategies through which weaponised narratives exploit the digital ecosystem, transforming citizens into ‘social media voters’ who are susceptible to emotionally driven manipulation. The authors’ analysis chronicles a range of tactics, from foreign electoral interference to the commercial ‘disinformation-as-a-service’ industry. By examining international case studies, this chapter demonstrates that the ultimate goal of these campaigns is often not merely to win an election but to erode the shared epistemology upon which democratic deliberation depends. Ultimately, the authors reveal how this machinery of politics works to undermine opponents, fracture public trust and fundamentally degrade the nature of governance in the information age.
