One summer in the early 1990s, my partner Sandra and I drove from our home in upstate New York to my hometown, Charlotte, NC. Like all new couples, we had spent a lot of time talking about our past lives, our families, and growing up, but this was the first time she was meeting my entire family. After a couple days in Charlotte, Sandra and I were in the car heading toward I-85 and our next vacation stop when she not so much asked but declared, “What the hell happened to you?”
Good question and one I too have pondered.
