I remember walking into your class as a senior literature major who did not particularly relish history as taught to me before. I did wonder, though, what intellectual history was all about besides having some base in literature. I still am not positive just what intellectual history is, but was enrolled as a graduate history student by the time I had finished that first class with you.

I was amazed at the time how you answered any reasonable question with full response and with a full bibliography to go with it. I continue to be amazed at such extensive bibliographical control.
