Professor Arthur Ekirch was a seminal force in shaping both my graduate school career and my entire life’s philosophy. From the time he, as acting chairman of the History Department, awarded me my first graduate assistantship until the time he and his wife, Dorothy, attended my graduation party, Dr. Ekirch aided me, taught me, and set a high example of dedication to scholarly excellence. I can say quite literally that I would not have been able to complete my Ph. D. degree without his support and guidance. I also can say that my studies under him led me to revise some of the basic, overall principles which guide my thoughts.
