This chapter concerns the properties of materials needed for the design of composite structures. It corresponds to clause 5, which has the following clauses.
Clause 5 consists mainly of cross-references to other Eurocodes and EN standards. The following comments relate to provisions of particular significance for composite structures.
The reference in clause 5.1(1) to EN 1992-1-1 for properties of concrete begins ‘unless otherwise given in EN 1994-1-1’. In EN 1992-1-1, clause 5.1 gives these properties for normal-aggregate concrete. Its Annex M, for lightweight-aggregate concrete, gives properties that are dependent on the oven-dry density relative to 2 200 kg/m3. They are presented as multiples of the properties of normal concrete with the same characteristic compressive strength. They include shrinkage and creep, which are higher, and the modulus of elasticity, which is lower. Hence, design is more likely to be governed by deflections than with normal concrete. In this guide, ‘concrete’ means normal-aggregate concrete unless stated otherwise.
