This chapter corresponds to Annex I of EN 1994-1-1, which has the following clauses.
Structures of this type, also known as ‘slim-floor construction’, are a new subject for Eurocode 4. The 2012 edition of this guide stated that their flexural behaviour was ‘quite well understood’, but there were no rules then for shear resistance or partial shear connection. It was not clear whether the properties of stud shear connectors were compatible with shear resistance from partial encasement in concrete. Their use is now permitted. The use of hollow-core slabs in shallow floors is illustrated in Example 19.1.
Beams within the scope of Annex I have a wide variety of cross-sections, illustrated in Figures I.1 and I.2 and Table I.1, and here in Figures 19.1 and 19.2. The Figures in EN 1994-1-1 include examples that have no in situ concrete above the top flange of the steel section. EN 1994-1-2 requires reinforced topping at least 30 mm thick for fire resistance periods of 60 min or above. In addition, there may be bottom longitudinal reinforcement, which will be essential if stirrups are required for vertical shear.
