Chapter 9: Counseling Men with Eating Disorders

In this chapter, we present a review of the epidemiological literature for eating disorders in men. We also aggregate evidence from previous studies concerning eating disorder prevention and treatment in male populations. Importantly, we provide an overview of eating disorder literature for men broadly, and more specifically, in men with diverse and intersectional identities. In addition to our summary of the existing literature regarding eating disorders in men, we also provide a case summary and analysis for a cisgender male with intersectional identities (gay and Black) who presented for treatment for an eating disorder. At the end of the chapter, we outline key future directions as well as some questions to consider regarding the basic and applied research and clinical work for men struggling with eating disorders.
