The journey traced throughout this book underscores the dynamic and evolving nature of management accounting in the face of profound organizational, technological, and societal transformations. From its historical foundations rooted in cost control and efficiency, to its reconfiguration through waves of innovation, digital disruption, and sustainability imperatives, management accounting has continually adapted to remain relevant, strategic, and forward-looking.
By exploring MAIs through a historical, theoretical, and contextual lens, we have revealed that innovation in accounting is neither linear nor purely technical. Rather, it is a complex, socially constructed process shaped by external institutional forces, internal organizational dynamics, the strategic agency of actors, and the evolving demands of the business environment. The adoption and institutionalization of MAIs – whether driven by digital technologies or sustainability agendas – require more than methodological sophistication; they demand interpretive flexibility, cultural alignment, and ethical awareness.
