Sport management academics and practitioners alike recognize the power of networks in influencing outcomes, including in the area of employment. Network theory prioritizes the importance of relationships and the pattern of those relationships. Thus, an actor's position within a network determines their opportunities and constraints. Well-connected people have better work-related outcomes than those who are not so well-connected. Landmark studies and various accounts from industry consultants demonstrate the importance of social networks in finding a new job, including high-level positions such as leadership roles.
