Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) exemplify the tenant of consciousness and cultural empowerment by positioning transformative learning as central to music education. Rather than treating music instruction as isolated from students’ social realities, HBCU music programs integrate identity, activism, and community engagement into the fabric of their curricula. Chapter 8 explores how Jackson State University and Spelman College cultivate liberatory learning environments that prepare students not only as musicians, but as culturally grounded leaders and social change agents.
