In this chapter, the authors make the case for developing a conceptual model as a foundation for understanding, research, management, and cultivation. Conceptual models are defined and described. The components of the expanded model are identified. The interdisciplinary nature of CoPs is highlighted, and components are traced to contributing disciplines. Expanding the model surfaces additional essential factors that were hidden in earlier models.

CoPs are part of all our lives. To function effectively and to achieve both the collective and individual expectations, we must be able to see them – what is below the waterline needs to be visible to members. Every member of a Community of Practice (CoP) has a role in shaping how the community works and what it does. CoPs are complex organisms. Complex organisms are most effectively illustrated graphically. Conceptual models are effective at communicating complex organisms and their behaviors (Embley & Thalheim, 2011; Greca & Moreira, 2000; Heemskerk et al., 2003; Thalheim, 2011). CoPs draw theory and practice from several disciplines. And, CoPs exist in every discipline. Working from a shared conceptual model facilitates understanding across disciplines and applications. A shared conceptual model is also essential as communities increase in scale, work through different stages of growth and health, increase or decrease in complexity, and refine their domains. For communities that have long durations, an integrated conceptual model is vital to building shared understanding across generations and populations.
