AI is a profoundly disruptive technology that demonstrates a sustained and meaningful impact on society globally, as well as on how people interact. The potential of AI is vast; it can drive unprecedented levels of productivity, promote the democratization and expansion of access to critical services, lead to significant advances in product innovation across all sectors, and contribute to economic development by enabling new methods of innovation and research and helping to promote potential solutions to our greatest challenges.
However, with the rapid and ubiquitous incorporation of AI into various sectors and for all elements of everyday life, several ethical and societal issues must be thoughtfully considered. Of important ethical and societal issues that must be thoughtfully considered. These issues are complex, related to specific notions of fairness, transparency, accountability, privacy and the potential misuse of AI. That is, while the power of AI to offer meaningful solutions to important problems is allowing for direct and potentially substantial benefits, it also creates the potential for direct harm if meaningful caution is not established. Societal impact must be a design specification, meaning those involved in AI and in society must shift from implementing practices that are characterized as reactive to practices characterized as proactive.
