This chapter explores the contemporary socio-ecological challenges in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and their implications for sustainable solutions. It examines the concept of disaster risks within socio-ecological systems (SES), emphasising the need for integrated approaches that consider environmental, social, and economic factors. This chapter highlights key challenges posed by climate change, urbanisation, and social inequalities, which exacerbate disaster risks. It also addresses the limitations of traditional DRR practices and the importance of sustainable thinking in reimagining disaster management, focusing on spatial planning and long-term resilience. Ultimately, this chapter argues that sustainable development, through inclusive governance and adaptive practices, is essential for fostering disaster-resilient societies.
