Ethnic minority businesses (EMBs) in Scotland are the product of demographic change, historical migration and resilience in the face of systemic barriers. This chapter outlines the evolution of EMBs, highlighting their economic significance in urban centres such as Glasgow and Edinburgh, where they provide essential services, create employment and foster community cohesion. Despite their contributions, EMBs remain underrepresented in high-growth sectors and face obstacles such as financial exclusion, discriminatory lending and limited access to support services. The chapter situates ethnic entrepreneurship within a wider social and policy context, noting how community networks both empower and constrain growth. By providing historical, demographic and sectoral analysis, the chapter frames EMBs as vital yet vulnerable contributors to Scotland’s economy. It calls for policy reform, inclusive financing and targeted support to unlock their untapped potential while recognizing the sociocultural resilience that sustains them.
