Advancements in digital technologies are reshaping the global tourism landscape, enabling destinations to offer more seamless, efficient, and engaging experiences. This chapter examines the evolving role of digital technologies in shaping Malaysia’s tourism industry, highlighting their potential in enriching tourists’ experience. The chapter explores key technologies such as mobile applications, voice assistants, and speech-to-text (STT) solutions that streamline travel planning, facilitate bookings, and improve communications. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as chatbots and facial recognition for security and operational efficiency, and immersive technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and the Metaverse, which offer interactive and personalised experiences, are also covered in this chapter. By enabling greater personalisation, operational automation, and immersive engagement, these innovations have the potential to transform Malaysia’s tourism into an unforgettable, seamless, and highly engaging experience for visitors. This chapter further addresses some of the challenges that hinder technology integration. They include issues on budgetary constraints, gaps in digital infrastructure, and the shortage of digitally skilled workers. These barriers can slow the integration efforts, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are a significant part of Malaysia’s tourism landscape. By overcoming these barriers through targeted policy support, industry collaboration, and capacity building, these technologies can be leveraged by the country to create a resilient, competitive, and experience-driven tourism industry.
