Of the three components of MI, expressive MI is the most visible, the most salient, and often the most immediately impactful in social life. Expressive MI emerges where movement becomes outwardly legible – where gestures, posture, gait, facial dynamics, and spatial orientation create the observable signals through which people communicate intention, emotion, confidence, warmth, or threat. These expressive behaviors are the first things others notice, the cues that shape first impressions, guide initial judgments, and anchor subsequent interpretations. The other two components of MI are invisibly operating behind the scenes. Perceptive MI functions as the informational engine behind expressive MI by allowing people to read others’ movements, detect situational demands, and anticipate how their own actions will be interpreted, thereby guiding what should be expressed. Regulative MI functions as the control system by fine-tuning timing, intensity, and coordination of movement, ensuring that expression is appropriately calibrated rather than impulsive, excessive, or misaligned with context.
