Principal Davis stared at the familiar bar graph displaying the persistent “achievement gap” in 8th-grade math scores between her under-resourced middle school, “Hope Academy,” and more affluent schools. Year after year, these graphs led to calls for more remediation and test prep. The numbers, analyzed through a probabilistic lens, painted a static picture of “what is”—a grim prediction of continued disparity.
But Principal Davis knew her school’s story was more complex. She knew about Ms. Adewale’s math class, where students facing significant challenges were showing remarkable growth. She knew about the after-school robotics club, run by a parent volunteer, that ignited a passion for STEM in students previously labeled “at-risk.” Traditional data reports offered no way to quantify these pockets of brilliance, identify the “secret ingredients” of success, or model how to leverage these assets to lift the entire school. Principal Davis needed more than graphs of gaps; she needed analytical tools to quantify hope, measure progress against adversity, and illuminate pathways to her aspirational goals.
