Before the day’s work begins—before the spreadsheets are opened and the statistical models are run—there is a quiet ritual. In my Washington, D.C. home, there is a room filled with art, whiskey, and books. As the first light of dawn spills through the windows, it does not find sterile white walls. It finds color and texture, stories etched in canvas and carved in wood. On one wall, a particular piece catches the morning sun. It hangs in a dark, mahogany frame, its intricate carvings grounding it in the present. But the art comes from a specific time, a specific place of challenge.
