Chapter Summary
This chapter examines homes and residences as first spaces and places. The authors review the knowledge assets, moments, and mobilities we experience where we live and explain the critical role these assets and moments play in an individual’s ability to participate in a knowledge society. Three archetypes – single-family detached homes, dormitories, and hotels – are analyzed for spatial syntax. This chapter also considers how the inability to develop first space assets or to participate in first space moments affects the development of a knowledge society.
