Abstract
As a transformative approach that promotes emotional well-being, positive behaviour and academic success by embedding shared moral and ethical principles into school culture, Values-based Education (VbE) creates learning environments where pupils feel valued, respected and motivated, developing a strong sense of belonging and confidence as learners. Schools implementing VbE consistently report improved engagement, behaviour for learning and academic outcomes through strong relationships, consistent language and intrinsic motivation rather than reliance on rewards or sanctions.
Trauma-informed practice integrates naturally within a values-based culture by creating safe, empathetic and relationally inclusive environments, particularly supporting pupils affected by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). These approaches help develop emotional regulation, resilience and readiness to learn. Relational inclusion further strengthens this culture by prioritising trust, belonging and positive relationships across the school community. When adults model consistency, empathy and self-regulation (Dix, 2021), pupils participate more confidently in learning and take greater responsibility for their behaviour. Restorative approaches complement these principles by focusing on reflection, accountability, repair and reconciliation rather than punitive responses.
When sensitively combined and integrated, the author has repeatedly witnessed how VbE, trauma-informed practice and relational inclusion create calmer, more inclusive learning environments that improve well-being, reduce barriers to achievement and support both academic success and holistic school improvement.
