It is our great pleasure to introduce this special issue of COMPEL: The International Journal for Computation and Mathematics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with selected papers presented at the 13th Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference, EPE-PEMC 2008 held in Poznan´,Poland, from 1 to 3 September, 2008. The conference was organized by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Poznan University of Technology and the Polish Society for Theoretical and Applied Electrical Engineering, Poznan Section, with cooperation of Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference (PEMC) Council from Budapest and European Power Electronics and Drives Association (EPE) from Brussels.

The EPE-PEMC conferences have a long-lasting history starting from 1970. In the last decade, the EPE-PEMC Conference has become the largest and most important conference on PEMC in Central Europe. EPE-PEMC conferences provide a forum for international specialists in PEMC to present and discuss papers on state-of-the-art topics. The main aim of the conference is to highlight the multidisciplinary character of PEMC and to show its vast scope of applications. The development of power electronics systems is a key condition to use renewable and clean energy, to introduce modern power conversion and energy transfer systems, to improve mass transport systems and to promote electric/hybrid cars.

The conference contributions concern 15 topics:

About 500 specialists, engineers and scientists from 53 countries all over the world participated in the EPE-PEMC 2008 Conference. There were 537 manuscripts submitted to the conference, and among them 417 papers were accepted for presentation. During the three days of conference, 146 papers were presented in lectures and special sessions and 271 in dialogue sessions.

We hope that this issue of COMPEL will provide various interesting and novel information to the readers.
