DIR may be the most frequently used command of the Disk Operating System (DOS). It shows you the contents of a diskette or a subdirectory on a hard disk. As part of DOS, the DIR command can be used whenever you see the DOS prompt (usually A> or B> but may be C> or higher on systems with hard disks).
