This paper aims to look at the utility of Web 2.0 technologies in the context of the profession as a whole.
This is an exploratory paper.
It is found that in many cases Web 2.0 technologies are appropriate given prudence in how they are used and their transparency to the patron. It was also found that patrons appreciate new uses of cutting edge technology as long as traditional library services are not abandoned.
It is important for libraries to gauge how much time and resources are expended on new, cutting edge technologies and evaluate how those resources can be used most effectively. There is no need for libraries to completely reinvent themselves in order to make use of Web 2.0 technologies; however, there is a lack in the education of librarians on how to make good use of these technologies.
This paper will hopefully assist libraries in taking stock of the current availability of Web 2.0 services, and think through how those services and technologies could be best used within the context of individual institutions.
