Anglo‐American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition, Chapter 9, Computer Files (Draft Revision), issued in 1987, outlined rules for Area 3, the File Characteristics Area, which was designed to indicate the type of computer file (data, program, or data and programs) and to present the characteristics of those files (number of files, records, bytes, etc.) according to rule 93. Update no. 15 to the MARC Formats for Bibliographic Data, announced in OCLC Technical Bulletin no. 181 and implemented in April 1988, creates the new 256 field, File Characteristics, for this purpose.
