Emergency Management at Federal and State Level in the United States of America: An Outline

The Federal Emergency Management Agency was established in order to provide a single focus for emergency management in the USA and is charged with providing a programme for hazard mitigation, preparedness planning, relief operations and recovery assistance. Federal law requires that each state must have in place a state emergency organization with designated officers and an emergency operations centre and should provide appropriate training for those likely to be involved in dealing with major hazards or emergencies. National plans are required because the capability of a state could be exceeded by a particular emergency.
