Innovative signs new contracts in France and Morocco

Innovative Interfaces, a leading supplier of Web-based library solutions, has announced that it has signed new contracts in France and Morocco.

Bibliothèque Municipale de Rennes will be converting to Millennium from its Geac GLIS system. Located in Rennes, France, the library's collection includes 800,000 volumes. This includes a rich collection of rare books –55,000 of which were published before 1811 – and 2,500 volumes from the sixteenth century. In 2004, the library will be located in a new building that will also house the Forum of Science and the Museum of Brittany. The library comprises a central library, 13 branches and four partner libraries.

Marie-Thérèse Pouillias, Director of the Bibliothèque Municipale de Rennes, said: "Millennium and its Web technology will help us to provide more and more services to our patrons, both inside the library and remotely through the Internet."

Université de Metz in Metz, France will also install Millennium. It will be migrating from its existing VUBIS system. The University has approximately 16,000 students, 700 professors, and has four locations in Lorraine: Metz, Thionville, St Avold, and Sarreguemines. The library has holdings of 250,000 volumes and an annual circulation of 105,000.

Bibliothèque Prince Bandar bin Sultan Fondation Forum d'Asilah (Public Library of Asilah), located in Asilah, Morocco, has chosen Millennium as its first automated library system. This will be Innovative's first installation in Morocco. This new library, which houses approximately 40,000 volumes, is part of a project controlled by the Moroccan government with private funding. The library's Web OPAC will be deployed in French, English, Spanish and Arabic.

Digital library initiatives at Glasgow University

Innovative Interfaces has announced that Glasgow University in Scotland will be a development partner for the company's digital library initiatives. Glasgow University will be working with Innovative to assist in the design and development of two Millennium products: Electronic Resource Management and Metadata Builder.

Fully integrated with the Millennium system or available as a stand-alone product, Innovative's Electronic Resource Management solves the library's problem of having to develop local control mechanisms for managing licensed resources such as e-journals, abstracting and indexing (A&I) databases, and full-text databases. Electronic Resource Management enables libraries to keep track of their e-journal licensing and purchasing details using a single system, streamlining workflows, and eliminating the need to maintain separate databases.

Metadata Builder, a component of MetaSource, enables libraries to describe and store digital collections using the library's metadata scheme of choice. Libraries can enter, batch, load, store and export XML in a defined metadata scheme and link digital objects with appropriate metadata. MetaSource is made up of three independent components: Millennium Media Management, XML Harvester, and Metadata Builder.

Mark Denham, Head of IT Services at Glasgow University, said: "This partnership benefits Innovative, our library and other libraries. We're able to provide Innovative with a good sense of what we, and other libraries around the world, currently encounter when managing digital resources. We are interested in making our archival collections and other digital resources more accessible to users. Partnering in the development of Metadata Builder will enable us to integrate the separate databases managed by our special collections department into the main catalogue using XML EAD records. Electronic Resource Management will enable us to better track and manage e-journal data."

Aaron Blazer, Director of International Customer Sales, said: "We are very excited to embark on this development partnership with Glasgow University,a long-time Innovative user. Combining the experience of a complex library with the ingenuity of our developers will assist us in creating a superior product that promises to revolutionise digital resource management."

He also noted that, in addition to Glasgow University, the University of Washington and Washington State University are development partners for Electronic Resource Management.

Founded circa 1475, Glasgow University Library (www.lib.gla.ac.uk/) is one of the great university libraries of Europe. Its collections, assembled over more than 500 years, reflect the achievements of international scholarship, including Scotland's own remarkable contribution, since the Middle Ages. It is a rich resource for the University, for the local community, and for the many visitors welcomed every year.
