Sheffield City Polytechnic introduced an on‐line circulation control system into its main site library in 1977. It is based on the Polytechnic's IBM 370 computer, with an Incoterm terminal processor, visual display units and Telepen bar‐code readers in the library. The article describes the system and the background to its development to suit the needs of a large polytechnic library. Attention is paid to the problems of implementation and operation of an original system. Future enhancement is discussed.
