This paper describes a research project to develop a personal workstation for use by information professionals and researchers. The aim of the project was to provide a complete environment for access to external information sources using commercially available software and hardware. An account is given of the development of each component of the workstation (such as choosing the modem, choosing the software for telecommunications, the inclusion of a CD‐ROM drive, office automation software and an automatic text editor), and the problems encountered.
