During the 1990s the modern library will continue its transformation into a centre for networked information as our current reliance on inhouse collections gives way to access to information from many sites. As costs continue to rise for material acquisition, technical support, and construction, access to information rather than ownership becomes more and more appealing. Simply put, why build, acquire, process, store and retrieve, on the off‐chance that a user may someday ask for the information? Why not forego those costs and pay a premium for delivery only at the time the information is requested?
