Regensburg University Library, in addition to the usual central library, has a number of decentralised departmental libraries. Acquisition and cataloguing procedures are centralised and there is great flexibility in the shelving of books. The departmental libraries (of which there are now 22) hold only a limited number of specially chosen books, relevant to the interests of the department concerned. They are shelved by subject to facilitate browsing and to enable the user to get quickly and directly to the books he is interested in. Older editions and outdated titles are returned to central storage, where they are shelved in the same subject arrangement as before. The same book number is kept; only the local number is changed.
