Over the last two decades or so, digital transformation has created incredible values for organizations, businesses and societies. With the fast development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology, people are increasingly concerned with societal harms derived from bad practices of digital transformation. Therefore, it has become critical for the world to promote, practice and study socially responsible ways of using, building and deploying digital and AI technologies.

Utilizing digital and AI technologies to create social value in a sustainable and ethical manner is essentially defined as socially responsible digital transformation (SRDT). Given that digital and AI technologies have tremendous potential to transform business and society in a variety of ways, both positive and negative, SRDT research must focus on the potential positive impact of digital and AI technologies on people and society while mitigating any negative impacts.

By promoting the principles of ethics, accountability, sustainability, equality and transparency and privacy, businesses, organizations and governments can support and help to develop a more sustainable, just and equitable digital world. Thus, this journal welcomes submissions that show findings through research on digital technology and AI that can contribute to ethicality, social good, sustainability, accountability, justice, equity, fairness, inclusivity, transparency, privacy or other related studies.

Note that a special section is published on this issue, which essentially promotes SRDT research and practice in today's ever-changing world. Three great research articles are included in this special section entitled “Social Informatics and Designing for Social Good.” We hope this helps encourage more brains to do the same, contributing to developing more relevant special issues/sections over time.
