Purpose

The paper proposes several small-scale vision systems to demonstrate the application of advanced computer vision (CV) for circular economy (CE).

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed small-scale vision systems are based on deep neural networks trained and run on different computing platforms.

Findings

This study's findings show that advanced CV can enable flexible waste sorting, disassembly, and resource mapping and quantification.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed vision systems are small-scale, hence not ready for deployment in real scenarios. Their purpose is to give proof of the concept within the context of CE and to clarify the link between CV and CE.

Originality/value

Development of different small-scale vision systems to link advanced CV and CE tasks.
