Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) in Offsite Construction (OSC), notably in the construction industry, is challenging. Based on a literature review of DfMA in assembling prefabricated structures and empirical issues (i.e. poor precast component dimensions), this paper explores manufacturing utilisation and configuration process perspectives that affect production rate and installation cost in the “loosely-coupled” construction industry.
The literature review reveals the following manufacturing utilisation as important for DfMA: solution, technologies, impact, development and future aim. The study is based on a systematic literature review (SLR) approach. This paper also presents an analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to increase the understanding of how OSCs can be managed within a quantum-inspired meta-heuristic algorithms on a prefabricated operational performance.
On a generic level, tentative findings suggest that there is a need for more improved management and manufacturing utilisation (i.e. building information modelling) and optimisation method, which accord with the needs for understanding DfMA in a building assemblies management context.
This paper shapes directions for future research by presenting a structure for how to include a DfMA in the configuration process within an OSC design’s overall management and what the main components are of this process.
