Purpose

In the context of sustainable development goals, construction enterprises face the opportunities and challenges of green innovation and technological breakthroughs. Collaborative innovation networks (CINs) are expected to improve the green performance (GP) of construction enterprises. However, as the bridge between CINs and GPs, knowledge search (KS) has paid insufficient attention. This study aims to investigate the mechanism and influence path of KS and propose solutions to enhance GP through effective strategies of KS within CINs.

Design/methodology/approach

Combining theory and engineering practice, this study developed a theoretical framework illustrating the relationships among CINs, KS and GP. An empirical study was conducted to test the hypotheses using 182 valid questionnaires from China based on a structural equation model.

Findings

The results show that CINs have a significant positive effect on GP. KS mediates the relationship between CINs and GP. Results found that the mediating effect of KS on network scale and relationship strength accounts for 32.8 and 45.0%, while KS has a complete mediating effect on network centrality.

Originality/value

This study reveals how KS mediates the relationship between CINs and GP in construction enterprises. It offers novel insights into the mechanisms driving green innovation and provides actionable strategies for construction enterprises.
