We are pleased to introduce the special issue Selecta 2023, featuring a selection of the best papers presented at the 52nd Brazilian Economic Meeting. The conference, organized by the Brazilian Association of Postgraduate Programs in Economics (Anpec), was held in Rio de Janeiro from December 10 to 12, 2023.

The conference’s scientific committees nominated articles considered the best in each field. The authors of these papers were then invited to submit their work, which underwent a fast-track review process with minor revisions suggested by a single referee. We also invited the meeting’s keynote speaker, Professor Maria Pia Paganelli, to submit a paper based on her lecture, which serves as the lead article in this special issue.

This issue comprises 11 papers spanning diverse research fields in economics, including political economy, history of economic thought, development economics, macroeconomics, applied microeconomics, education economics, environmental economics, urban economics and industrial organization.

We extend our gratitude to Professors Luciano Nakabashi and Cassio Besarria, president and vice-president of Anpec for the 2022–2024 period, and to the members of the conference’s scientific committees.
