Green Audit: The Path to Global Survival

The reconvening of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (The “Earth Summit”) from 3 to 4 June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, preceded by a meeting of the Commissioners in London in April, to debate “nothing less than the fate of the planet”,emphasized the urgency of immediate action. Industry and commerce, as well as the public sector, have a crucial role to play, and an effective approach is to set up an environmental or green audit. Based on survey interviews, provides reasons for corporate involvement in environmental concerns. Lack of involvement will eventually be self‐defeating for trade and industry. In addition, imposed legislation that will result will be less favourable than organizations voluntarily putting their own houses in order. Organizations can use their own specialized expertise to reduce environmental uncertainty. Makes helpful suggestions as to the nature and possible content of the green audit.
