Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between librarians’ big data management capabilities and innovative performance in public library settings, with value perception as a mediating factor.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey questionnaire, adapted from a previous study, was distributed among librarians working in public libraries (154 sample) in Kermanshah Province, Iran. The number of research samples was 154. Structural equation model method and SPSS and Smart PLS software were used for data analysis.

Findings

The results show that value perception functions as a mediating mechanism by transferring the positive effects of big data management capabilities toward innovative performance. In practical terms, librarians who possess stronger knowledge-based dynamic capabilities appear more able to recognize the strategic value of big data and this heightened value perception then motivates them to adopt and implement innovative practices.

Originality/value

The research was conducted in a developing country (Iran), the relationship between big data management capabilities and the innovative performance of librarians is investigated with regard to the mediating role of value perception so that librarians’ views on this clear debate and the way to use Facilitate big data in public libraries.
