I thought it might be useful, or at least interesting, to do a quick review of the literature on electronic libraries on an annual basis for readers of The Electronic Library. Since my library does not take all the relevant journals and since it would be expensive to get photocopies of all the relevant articles, then much of the review would have to be based on abstracts. Nevertheless, it could still offer a guide to what appeared where and on what topic in 1986 and as such afford an insight into research and trends. The idea was not to compare the various library and information science databases and see what each contained, the overlap, delays in appearance, differences in indexing, fields, data elements, abstracts, etc. (though this would have been interesting in itself — any takers?).
